Why does only the Power Button wake some Dell Systems from Sleep? Why is it that certain generations of laptops or tablets can only be woken from sleep mode by using the power button? Why is there no Deep Sleep Control feature in the BIOS of your system? (Even with no external connected devices (USB), the system onboard keyboard and touchpad can only be awoken from sleep with the power button.) Note: These systems are working as they were designed. USB Wake Support This has everything to do with the USB Wake Support functionality of the following Dell systems: (Table.1 USB Wake Support Functionality) Systems with USB Wake Support FunctionalityInspironVostroXPSXPS DesktopLatitudeOptiPlexPrecision MobilePrecision Workstation14" 747213" 537015" 956027" 7760 AIO12" 7285505015" 55205720 AIO15" 757214" 547113" 9370 12" 5280305015" 75203620 Tower15" 757715" 7570 12" 52885055 A-Series17" 77203420 Tower13" 737014" 3478 14" 54805055 Ryzen CPU15" 5530 2-in-15820 Tower13" 7373 2-in-115" 3578 14" 5488525015" 75307820 Tower15" 7570 15" 5580705017" 77307920 Tower15" 7573 2-in-1 11" 31803050 AIO 7920 Rack13" 5370 11" 31897450 AIO 15" 5570 13" 3380 17" 5770 12" 5289 14" 3476 13" 7389 15" 3576 12" 7212 14" 3490 12" 5285 12" 7280 13" 7380 14" 7480 14" 3480 15" 3580 14" 7490 What is USB Wake Support? There is a BIOS setup setting on some systems called USB Wake Support, which can enable or disable the ability of a USB device to wake the system from the S3 state (Sleep). When enabled, USB devices can wake the system from S3 (example: USB mouse, USB keyboard). Furthermore, on All in One (AIO) systems, the touch screen is a USB input device and can also wake the system. When disabled, USB devices cannot wake the system form S3. Disabling this setting can help a user save power by turning off power to the USB ports in S3. USB Wake Support does not function on battery power; that is, if a laptop system on battery power enters S3, USB devices cannot wake it up. Whether the USB devices are externally powered or derive their power from the system’s USB port makes no difference. The determining factor is whether or not the system’s USB ports are powered and able to detect USB traffic. Upon entering S3, the system turns off power to the USB ports in order to conserve power. Some systems support a feature called Deep Sleep. For USB Wake to work, the USB ports must not be in Deep Sleep. Deep Sleep Support: When set to Disabled: All USB ports can wake up the system from S3, but only the system’s Smart Power On Connector port can wake up the system from S4 and S5.When set to Enable S5 only: All ports can wake up the system from S3, but only the system’s Smart Power On Connector port can wake up the system form S4. No wake support for S5When set to Enable S4 and S5: All ports can wake up the system from S3. Wake from S4 and S5 is disabled in this case. Back to Top
