Details
When creating an Instant Clone desktop pool, the initial publish of an image fails with an error message such as
"After waiting for 600 seconds internal template VM: <VM name> is still has not finished customization. Giving up."
Solution
There are multiple reasons for this error state to occur. Please check the following items.
Ensure the Instant Clone module was installed during Horizon Agent installation.
To do this, log in to the golden image and run regedit. Navigate to the following registry location.[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\VMware, Inc.\Installer\Features_HorizonAgent]Observe that the “NGVC” entry has a value of “Local” If not, then the Horizon Agent needs to be reinstalled with the Instant Clone module selected.Information about additional agent modules can be found here: Silent Installation Properties for Horizon Agent
Ensure that the Instant Clone pool is provisioned to a vSphere Distributed Switch (VDS), which has appropriate DHCP, AD, and Horizon infrastructure access. For Horizon 7.12 or earlier, and Horizon 8.0, Instant clones require static port binding with the elastic port allocation. Do not change the port binding to ephemeral. For Horizon 7.13 and Horizon 8.1 or later, Instant Clones work with static, dynamic, or ephemeral ports.
On the golden image, check that the latest Windows Updates have been applied, that there are no pending installs waiting to complete, and that updates have been paused.
If the above has been completed, it is possible to enable Debug mode in order to further investigate. Please see: Troubleshooting Instant Clones in the Internal VM Debug Mode
With Debug Mode enabled, attempt to provision the pool again, and then use the vSphere Remote Console to access the VMs which get created. Look for the logs in %system_drive%\Windows\Temp\VMware\ to assess where the issue is.Please see Horizon View Best Practices: Instant Clone Provisioning and Troubleshooting (91265) for additional guidance and best practices with Instant Clone Provisioning.
