If an HPE ProLiant system with VMware vSphere Distributed Services Engine server is updated with the iLO 5 firmware included in the Gen10/Gen10 Plus Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) 2024.04.00.00, the installation or reinstallation of the VMware ESXi Operating System will fail displaying error messages similar to the following:
"Failed to offline DPU in Slot #"
"Failed to start install task on DPU"
Scope
Any of the following HPE ProLiant systems with VMware vSphere Distributed Services Engine platforms running VMware ESXi 8.0 and configured with a Pensando Distributed Services Platform DSC-25 v2 10/25Gb 2-port SFP28 32GB Special Card (P47928-B21):
HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 Plus 6326 Small 16TB Server with VMware vSphere Distributed Services Engine (P59780-B21)
HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 Plus Medium 25TB Server with VMware vSphere Distributed Services Engine (P59781-B21)
HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 Plus 6338 Large 38TB Server with VMware vSphere Distributed Services Engine (P59782-B21)
Resolution
There is no workaround for this issue. HPE recommends that customers do not update their servers with the Gen10/Gen10 Plus SPP 2024.04.00.00.
This issue has been resolved with the newer HPE iLO 5 firmware version included in the Gen10/Gen10Plus SPP 2024.04.00.00 + Patch Bundle 1 Release which is available here:

Important:
For platforms that upgraded to Gen10/Gen10 Plus SPP 2024.04.00.00, HPE recommends to go back to the supported SPP version 2023.09.00 (as noted in the Customer Notice above) or upgrade to the newer Gen10/Gen10 Plus SPP2024.04.00.00 + Patch Bundle 1 that includes the fix.
VMware ESXi Operating upgrades are not affected as the upgrades are performed with the vSphere Lifecycle Manager (vLCM) service.
A future release of the Gen10/Gen10 Plus SPP with a newer version of the HPE iLO 5 firmware will address this issue, and this advisory will be updated when the solution becomes available.
