Document Subtype: Security Bulletin Document ID: hpesbhf04147en_us Last Updated: 2021-05-19 Release Date: 2021-05-18 Document Version: 1 Potential Security Impact: Local: Execution of Arbitrary Code Source: Hewlett Packard Enterprise, HPE Product Security Response Team VULNERABILITY SUMMARY On March 2 2021, multiple security vulnerabilities in the GRUB2 boot loader were disclosed. Exploiting these vulnerabilities may allow an attacker to bypass Secure Boot on systems where it is enabled. HPE has released updates to several of its boot environments that address these security vulnerabilities in the GRUB2 boot loader. Secure Boot ensures that a system's entire chain of executable code, from the system Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) to the operating system, is known and trusted. Each component in the chain of executable code verifies and validates the integrity of the next component. Secure Boot uses digital signatures to ensure that only known and trusted code is executed by the system firmware before the operating system is booted. Secure boot relies on two separate databases: Allowed Signature Database (db) - contains a list of allowed digital signatures (typically X.509 certificates of signing authorities) Forbidden Signature Database (dbx) - contains a list of prohibited digital signatures (typically SHA-256 Authenticode hashes of specific executable images). Note: Digitally-signed code must be listed in the Allowed Signature Database (db) and must not be explicitly prohibited by the Forbidden Signature Database (dbx). The Impacted Product Information section below lists vulnerable versions of HPE Synergy products. The Resolution section below describes how to obtain updated firmware for HPE Synergy products in the Synergy Service Pack (SSP), and provides links to detailed instructions on how to apply the fixes.
